Want to see the world famous snow monkeys? Book a day tour with us to check them out - a perfect 'rest day' to give those leg muscles a sorely needed break. Approximately 200 of the lovable monkeys inhabit the hot springs of 'Hells Valley', named after the hot springs that dot the region. After experiencing the snow monkeys in the morning, the tour will head to the historic town of Obuse, home to the famous Japanese artist Hokusai and the museum dedicated to his works. Enjoy a traditional Japanese banquet and see the 240 year old Masuichi Sake Brewery (and of course sample their product!). The next stop is the Zenkoji temple located in Nagano. Nozawa Fire Festival
The Dosijin Fire Festival is an old tradition held in the Nozawa Onsen village each year on January the 15th. This is one of Japan's top rated festivals and is one of the most popular events in the Nagano region amongst Japanese locals and foreign tourists alike. The festival is held to pray for a plentiful harvest, good health and good fortune for the year ahead. It begins as the 25 and 42 year old men of the village build a 18-metre high shrine made from wood, which will soon become the focus of the festival. Men of these ages are chosen because these are unlucky ages according to Japanese tradition. During the night, the festival commences as the 42 year old men take station on the shrine, and the 25 year olds attack the base. Then local villagers of all ages grab torches and try to light the shrine on fire, while the chosen men protect the shrine by using pine branches to swat the attackers' torches. After a lively battle usually lasting around an hour the shrine finally succumbs to the fire, and everyone celebrates. All the while many locals carry around trays of sake to the crowds ensuring all the onlookers have a great time!
